Necessary or Extra?

I’ve run into a lot of my coaching clients lately who are struggling with their lives & their businesses, but they don’t know why…

They believe they are doing everything it takes to be successful and they are diligently working in alignment with what they want…

Yet they are still frustrated and just can’t seem to figure out what’s wrong.

If you’ve ever been in this situation (heaven knows I have) then you’re going to love this post and the simple solution to your problem.

In one of my favorite books, Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand, one of the lead characters, Francisco D’Anconia, repeatedly states that any time you see what appears to be a contradiction, you must check your premises because contradictions don’t exist.

So I would say the same thing…If you aren’t getting the results you want, check your premises.

Specifically, there is one type of apparent contradiction I see runny rampant with my well intentioned clients, it is whether they view and activity or outcome to be ‘necessary’ or ‘extra’.

For example, many small business owners see the idea of doing their accounting as unnecessary, so they come to view it as extra until tax season.

Another common belief is that you only need to market if your business is doing badly, so if you are bringing in customers consistently then you can stop marketing.

Other people believe that eating properly is extra even though everyone knows exercise is necessary to lose weight.  However, upon closer inspection, eating properly is far more effective for losing weight.

The list goes on and on, but the principle is the same… Can you determine what is actually necessary from what is extra… Or, another way to put it is, can you determine which activities you’ve been putting off because you don’t want to do them from those that can actually be put off without a negative result.

So here’s your chance to overcome the invisible barrier to your success…

What you would tell someone else was necessary for success if they wanted to achieve the results you are seeking?

Go ahead… write it down.

I know for me, this line of questioning is painful, but oh so effective.  Because, as I make a list of what someone else should do, it becomes readily apparent where I’ve been fooling myself into thinking something was extra when in fact it is central to my success and completely necessary.

For example, I kept telling myself that building a website and filling it full of content was necessary, and that getting out into the real world to network and meet other people face to face was extra….

Boy, did I get that one wrong.  Its completely the opposite.

Sure a website is important, but without real people to read it, the website is wasted.  Besides, would you rather work with a coach you’ve met in person or someone online?

So, once again, ask yourself where YOU’ve been fooling yourself into thinking an activity central to your success is extra rather than necessary?

If you can identify one or more of these errors, you’re already on your way to the next level and breaking through that invisible barrier that’s been holding you back…
